Social Development Centre (SDC) mahottari was established in 1997 as NGO by a group of Terai marginalized group's activists. SDC have registered from District Administration office and is also affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC) in Katmandu. Since the establishment of SDC it has been very active to promote rights of Dalit, Women and Excluded groups through advocacy and awareness programmed in Terai/Madesh districts. SDC established for and by Minority who constitute ... Present population of this District.
Since the establishment SDC has been engaged in the various types of awareness rising and advocacy programmed for Dalits, Woman and minority groups in Terai/Madhesh and they are as follows:
- With the funding support of PACT NEPAL, NEWAH, Karitas Nepal, IHRICON, District Education Office, Election commission, DFCC, USAID/Chemonics international, HR Alliance, DDC/LGCDP, UNICEF, World Education . It worked through and for Women, child, Senior citizen, Madhesi and minority groups Empowerment under the various programmes. SDC mobilizing these groups for their rights. They formed saving and credit groups and they are generated fund also. With this money many families were able to raise their income for better economic status. The major focus of these programmed was law literacy as a result of that the women raised voice against child marriages, gambling and liquor drinking. The beneficiaries of these programmes were 80% Dalit and Muslims. 20% non Others. They were very instrumental to change the discriminatory practices going on in the village for centuries. In the past Dalits had to take their own glass to drink tea from a local tea shops and they had to sit in a separate place. Through their awareness raising and movement they were able to change this pattern completely and nowadays such discriminatory behaviors in the programme area is hardly found. The programme itself was very short and small funding the groups formed could not sustain which we take this as a great lesson.
- SDC is one of the few organizations which were able to take support from the IHRICON to Advocacy right of Women and Madheshi programme in 10 VDCs.
